* Introduction*
My favorites are the Special Shapes balloons... such as a piggy bank; old tennis shoe; newspaper; The Ark; Garfield; Boo-Boo Bear, and my favorite has always been the Creamland Cow.
Anyway, I remember watching the Special Shapes, as I mentioned to a friend, that, one of these days, there would be a Special Shape balloon similar to an orange traffic/construction barrel. We had a little laugh about it. FINALLY...in the Fiesta of 2006, there was a orange traffic barrel hot-air balloon flying in the Fiesta! Yahoo!
This is about the time the silliness for the orange barrel humor started, and months later I was still getting ridiculous ideas for the orange barrels, etc. Later, I went to out in the streets to photograph orange barrels at construction sites around town, that had plenty of orange barrels, cones; barricades, etc. (people must have thought I was crazy!)
The silliness went on for months, so I made a list of the ideas, but I had no idea at the time, what I was going to do with them. This is some of the silliest stuff I've ever come up with!
The only thing I could think of to do with the ideas, was for marketing my work...so, that's what I did. I placed silly clip-art images and ideas on graph paper, and placed the captions, headlines, etc . Copies were made on bright orange paper. I also bought matching bright orange envelopes, which I put graphics on as well, to send my new "attention-getters" out to be mailed.
I was very pleased with the results, and it didn't take long before the list of ideas came to over 40. But, I cut the list to about 15 or so of ideas I would use. And, that's what I still have today in the year 2007, I still market my work this way, and of course the preparation for the Bumpy Road of Life show.

Along The Bumpy Road of Life! (Display show/Something for Everyone) |
Who is that crazy person out there in the streets photographing orange barrels and construction sites?
I plead guilty to all charges! To put a face on an orange barrel, I would photograph it in color, and then paste a funny face on it after the film was developed. I have a book on funny faces; ears; noses; eyes; eye-browes, etc., and to get the fact, I would make a transperancy of the images on the page. I would than cut out the parts of the face I would use, and tape them on the picture of the orange barrel...WALLA...a face on an orange barrel.
For example, I shot several pictures of construction and orange barrels at the corner of Osuna and Edith. These photos were screened for use and black and white copies in my booklet. So, in the material, I mentioned that the photo was taken at the corner of Osuna and Edith. How did the face get on the orange barrel located at Osuna and Edith? |

I've been doing the orange barrel humor since 1996, and during that time, I had about 60 orange barrel scenes on the "to do" list. But, what was I going to do with all of these scense? I wasn't, so I just made ten orange barrels scenes, for my marketing my work. I was not a marketing major in college, but I know that when I mail someone a piece of my work, I want them to keep the work, or give it to someone who will keep it. The last thing I want, is for my work to find the land-fill, etc. So, I use the orange barrel humor as "attention-getters," and it has worked out well. I have a lot of fun with it all.
As of July, 2007, I don't have a scanner to get some of these images on my website, and I won't get one, until I see there is interest in the show. So, in the meantime, I have to use my writing skills (if any) to describe ten of these orange barrel scenes that will be in the show.
All of these orange barrel scenes are done in standard 8" x 11" orange paper.
1) Orange Barrel Hot-Air Balloon: The people in Albuquerque are pretty familiar with the hot-air balloons, as we see hundreds of them every year. .This is where the idea of orange barrel humor came from as I said in the Introduction. If I'm not mistaken, I think there really was an orange barred balloon in the 2006 event. Up...up and away...an orange barrel balloon in the skies!
2) Orange Barrel Award: An actual photo of an orange barrel is mounted on a trophy base and the caption reads: "Give this orange barrel award to someone you don't like!"
3) Paint by the numbers: This is one of my favorites. It's simply a drawing of an artist eisal and on it, is a real picture of an orange barrel. With the use of transfer numbers, I placed a "1" on the white part of the orange barrel, and a "2" on the orange part of the orange barrel...and a little index off to the side...and WALLA...paint an orange barrel by the numbers, etc.
4) The Orange Planet: In this scene, two aliens, from the planet Krouton have ascended into the Earth's atmosphere, and are calling back to Master Control awaiting further instructions, and the caption reads: "This is the SV-1 calling...come in please. We have left the red planet called Mars...and have come to the orange planet called Earth...over..."
5) Crystal Ball/Fortune teller: This is a picture of a gypsy looking into a crystal ball, and she sees an orange barrel and the capton reads, "The future doesn't look good...it doesn't look good at all."
6) Artist: This is cartoon-like picture of an artist busily at work on his painting, which is a picture of an orange barrel, and the caption reads, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!"
7) Out in the streets: This is a real (close-up) photograph of orange barrels lined up on the street, as far as the eye can see, and the caption reads, "Life in the SLOW lane!"
8) Orange Barrel Follies: This is a scene of a stage where women are performing, and in a chorus line, are side-by side kicking up their feet, similar to the Rocketts in New York. All the women in the line are wearing orange uniforms, and there are orange and white striped lines going from one side of the stage to the other.
9) "The Silent Majority" That's the title/caption of an actual photograph, whereby the entire page is filled with orange barrels. |

10) No Respect: This is an actual photo of an orange barrel that was thrown in a ditch in town. A funny face on the orange barrel tells the story, etc. |
Reminder: Every time you see some of those pesky orange barrels out in the streets...think of me, won't you? |

Nothing is in concrete here...I have an open mind to new ideas and suggestions. |

Putting faces on orange barrels, cones...how is it done? Actual photographs are taken out in the streets of orange barrel, cones; barricades and construction sites, etc. The color photos are enlarged. I have a book on faces of different kinds...happy; sad; anger; perplexed; worry; mad and so forth. I also have pages on various parts of the face like smiles; moustaches; beards; eye-brows and so forth.
I make a copy of the page out of the book on what I want, and then get it made into a transperancy. I then cut out what I want (eyes; nose; smile; ears) and tape it on the color photo...and make a color copy and...WALLA...a picture of a real orange barrel with a face on it! I have a picture of an orange barrel with two big ears, but no face...and the caption reads, "Help...somebody stole my identiy!" (ha-ha-ha!) I have to do it this way because I am not an artist...I can't draw a straight line...or a crooked line for that matter! (This description will be in the show) |

People have asked me how and where I get my ideas, and the answer is always the same...around the home; at the work place and out in the streets. |
I think for most of the people who have driven down the bumpy road of life, can relate to this piece, which is entitled, Stranded! |
Informational signs such as the one shown to the left, will dot the display in yellow, white and orange...the traffic colors. . |

This show is about humor and creativity, which just seem to go together!
I was not a marketing major in college, but I think it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know, that if a person mails out brochures, etc., he or she would like that person, business or organization to keep what they were mailed. Example: I've been doing orange barrel humor since 1996 to market my work...they're my little "attention-getters" in their orange jump suit!
One day, I got a call from one of the local television stations, and the fellow said he wanted to do a story on my work. (I was a woodcarver at the time) I didn't recogonize the fellow, as having sent him any of my "propaganda." "How did you know about me?" I asked. He told me that another reporter had transferred to Houston to another job, and she gave him the information I sent her.
This is what I'm talking about...I want people to keep what I send them, instead of sending it to the land-fill. The way I market my work, will be at the show, and examples of the bright orange envelope, the orange and gold sheets, and how it all came about. I certainly hope the public will be interested in seeing this. |
