Northwest Airlines was in bankruptcy, and going under. A call from company officials went out to their employees, for their ideas as to how to save the company.
In just 90 days, a stunning 50,000 ideas came pouring in from employees!
Northwest had gone smokeless a few years previously, and one of those ideas, was to remove all the weighty ash trays from all the airplanes.
When the weight of the ash trays was calculated and all the airplanes were figured in, it would save Northwest over 400,000 dollars per year in lower fuel costs! Amazing!
A further development of this idea, would take everything off of an airplane, which was not absolutely necessary.
All of us have a closet or garage from hell, stacked with junk, and an airplane is probably no different. But, the savings here is amazing! I've always been amazed at how so many, seemingly insignificant ideas, can save so much time and money. |
